WIM 2010 – International Congress on Water Management in the Mining Industry, held on 9 -11 June in Santiago, Chile, is the second of a series initiated in 2008 by Gecamin with the purpose of providing an international forum where natural resource professionals, engineers, managers, researchers, technology consultants and suppliers may analyse and discuss recent innovations and developments related to the availability, efficient use and sustainable management of water in the mining industry.
The Congress sought to promote the exchange of knowledge and best practices in the identification and characterisation of water resources, sustainable water supply, efficient water use in mining and metallurgical processes and responsible management of mining effluents.
This volume contains the proceedings of the Water in Mining 2010 Congress with a total of 45 peer-reviewed technical papers written by authors from 13 countries. The publication also includes four keynote lectures.
The papers published in these proceedings discuss regional water concerns, case studies and lessons learned, and cover the following topics:
- Watershed management
- Natural resources quantification and management
- Water supply
- Desalination
- Groundwater modelling
- Mine dewatering
- Water accounting
- Water management
- Efficient use
- Effluent characterisation and treatment
This book reflects the mining industry efforts to improve water management methodologies addressing such concerns as limited use, rights, access, distribution and community involvement. It should be of interest to all the professionals involved in the design and operation of mining projects and in particular to those committed to adopting sustainable water management practices.
